DNR urges boating safety heading into summer months

PARKERSBURG, W.Va (WTAP)- Boating, especially in the Mid-Ohio Valley, is a fun summer time activity, but thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths happen from boating related accidents each year.

Local DNR officers want to make sure you have the proper safety equipment when you’re out on a boat.

That includes properly fitting life jackets for everyone on board, registration and licences, and communication lights.

Officials say accidents do happen, even here.

“We’ve had a couple boats sink this year. They do happen. The most important thing is just wear your life jacket. And also, just remember, alcohol, boats, they do not mix. A lot of people correlate alcohol with boating and boating under the influence is just like driving a vehicle under the influence. It is a criminal offence in the state of West Virginia,” explains Sgt. Joshua Parsons of the West Virginia Natural Resources Police.

Recreational boating statistics show that over 26 hundred injuries and more than 650 deaths occurred from boating activities in the United States in 2017 alone.
