UPDATE: Woman fatally shot man in self-defense, Gallia County authorities say

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WTAP) - UPDATE: 7/3/19 5:45 P.M.

A woman who fatally shot a man in Gallia County during a home invasion in April acted in self-defense and will not be charged, authorities said in news release on Wednesday.

Keith Coon, 51, of Jackson, Ohio, was shot to death on April 12 inside a residence on East Bethel Church Road.

In the joint news release, Sheriff Matt Champlin and Prosecuting Attorney Jason Holdren said authorities' investigation found no connection between Coon, the woman and the residence where the shooting occurred. It was also determined that Coon was under the influence of amphetamines and methamphetamine.

"After a thorough review of the investigation, my office will not be pursing any charges in this matter," Holdren said. "It is abundantly clear that the victim acted in self-defense and Mr. Coon gave her no other alternative."

According to the news release, authorities obtained home-security video showing Coon entering the woman's home wearing only boxer shorts and tennis shoes. After a brief confrontation with Coon, authorities said the woman went into a bedroom and retrieved a firearm.

After triggering a home-security system that alerted authorities, the news release said the woman found Coon in a common area of the residence and shot him twice when he "wielded a pair of kitchen shears over his head in an aggressive manner."
