Early voting running smoothly in Washington County

MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - UPDATE 10/23/18

Byers said early voting has been running smoothly and they've seen a steady stream of people every day.

Early voting opened on October 10.

"Very brisk both through the mail and coming into the office," said Byers, describing how busy it's been. "We've hit over 1200 people that have walked in here and then the mail we've sent out like way over 5,000 and like 3,000 have come back."

Byers said the option of early voting continues to grow each election.

"it was part of our thought process when we started to reduce the number of [polling] locations, the movement is definitely toward the early voting in the office rather than out in the county anymore."

Extended hours for early voting begin this week.

On Saturday, October 27, the office will be open from 8:00 to 4:00 p.m. Then from October 29 to November 2, the office will be open from 8:00 to 7:00 p.m. The office will be open again on the weekend on Saturday November 3 from 8:00 to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The final day for early voting will be Monday November 5, from 8:00 to 2:00 p.m.

On Election Day (November 6), voters must go to their polling place to vote. They cannot vote at the board office.

Now that the deadline to register to vote in Ohio has passed, early voting begins. Wednesday was the first day Ohio voters could vote early. In Washington County, you can vote at the Board of Elections Office on Davis Avenue, until November 5th, the day before Election Day.

The elections office is open from 8 - 5 Monday - Friday and will be open Saturday October 27th and Saturday November 3rd from 8 - 4. The week before the election they will be open from 8 - 7 Monday - Friday.

Deputy Director Peggy Byers says, “We had about 3,500 ballots that were dropped into the mail this morning. We have more to get ready we just weren't all the way ready. And we had about 100 people that walked into the office today. We actually had a line when we opened up this morning. So we are very very busy so if you want to do your early vote, the time is now, come on out to see us.”

Early voting in West Virginia begins October 24th. West Virginia voters still have until the 16th to register.
