WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ohio (WTAP) - A woman and her grandchild safely escaped a fire that gutted their rented single-story, wood-frame home Wednesday afternoon in rural Washington County.
The home on Moss Run Road, located just off County Road 26, was full of smoke and flames when firefighters arrived, according to Jeff Lauer, chief of the Fearing Township Volunteer Fire Department, which was one of five departments called to scene.
With no fire hydrants in the area, Lauer said his department immediately began pumping water from a creek in front of the home. When other departments arrived, they used water from their tankers and shuttled water to the scene.
In addition to Fearing Township, firefighters from Little Muskingum, Salem Township, Newport and Reno responded to the scene.
