PARKERSBURG W.Va, (WTAP)- A local group retires two American flags in a ceremony at Parkersburg City Park.
The ceremony was held Saturday afternoon to officially retire two worn out flags. After being properly cut and folded, members of the Parkersburg Pathfinder Club placed the pieces of the flags on the fire.
While burning an American flag is often thought of as a way of protest, it is also the correct way to lay a flag to rest.
“Actually the proper way to do it is in a dignified manner because you don’t put a flag in the trash. So according to the US code, that’s the proper way to do it; it’s the most dignified,” explains Victor Zill, the deputy director of the Parkersburg Pathfinder Club.
Flags should be retired when they’re worn out, faded, or torn to the point that it wouldn’t be dignified to fly anymore.
