Former Parkersburg Police Chief passes away at 78

PARKERSBURG W.Va, (WTAP)- William R. Rhodes was a Parkersburg native and began his service with the Parkersburg Police Department in 1964.

He was appointed Chief in 1978 where he held the position until 1982.

He is credited with organizing the Parkersburg Police Honor Guard, doubled the number of officers in the detective bureau, and hired the department’s first ever female officer.

He was also an Army Veteran and 1958 graduate of Parkersburg High School. He attended programs at Marshall University, West Virginia University, Marietta College, Southern Police Institute and The West Virginia State Police Academy.

After retirement from the force, he started the Rhodes Investigations, worked as a private investigator, and served two terms as a Wood County Magistrate.

Rhodes passed away on Sunday from cancer. He was 78 years old.
