WOOD COUNTY, W.Va. (WTAP) - Dozens of ham radio hobbyists gathered at the 4H fairgrounds in Wood County this morning for the Parkersburg Area Hamfest.

The Wood County Emergency Communications group oversaw the flea market-like event, which garnered around 150 vendors and visitors throughout the day. Adults paid a small admittance fee to shop and learn from fellow hobbyists.

President of the Emergency Communication Group, Ken Harris says that radio is unique in that it doesn’t have to rely on infrastructure.

“Amateur radio is still a big thing even though the internet and cell phones are kind of slowing it down, but its… you know, when all else fails a radio will get through,” said Harris.

The emergency communications group teaches a class to obtain an amateur radio licenses, you can visit wc8ec.org for more information.
