RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WTAP) - Today more than 800 students out of Jackson County took a field trip back in time to the 1800s.

It was the second annual school day at the Raid on Ravenswood event.

Kids from Jackson County and even a school from Charleston made the trip, to learn about the civil war. Re-enactors gave presentations and taught the kids about weapons, medicine, politics and culture during the civil war.

The 17th Virginia Cavalry Company F organized the school day and all the events scheduled.

"It's going to make them come back tomorrow when we have our parades and our battles and then we have a ball that evening. So you know it's just going to make the kids come back. And hopefully we can gain more troops basically. This is the generation we're trying to teach." says Becky Dixon, secretary of the 17th Virginia Cavalry Company F.

The kids also visited shops with authentic items from the 1800s as well as other souvenirs. The festivities will continue all weekend.
