Keep your packages safe from "Porch Pirates"
With the holiday season in full swing, many people are ordering online packages that are being shipped to their homes.
There are those, however, who scour around neighborhoods looking to steal some of those packages. They are commonly known as "porch pirates."
Local law enforcement has many tips in order to keep your packages safe from burglars out there. One tip is to, if you are not home, keep all of your outdoor lights on to give the illusion that you are home, which will scare away potential robbers.
Another thing to make sure of is to keep neighbors in touch with when you will be out of town. Make sure they are able to watch your home and make sure no one comes and steals any items.
"Some people keep things on their porch like a large item so they can put a package or something behind that item, so it's not visible from the street," said Vienna Police Chief Mike Pifer. "It's a crime of opportunity, so they're looking for things. So if they don't see a package there, they're less apt to come up and look for a package on someone's porch."
Around the Mid-Ohio Valley, there have not been many reported cases of porch pirates, but the departments are always patrolling the areas to make sure they are seen, and therefore will drive away potential burglars.
