Local Foodland stores become Piggly Wiggly by end of March
A big change is coming to area Foodland stores.
By late March, they will have a change in name-along with much of what's on the shelves.
Jim Oppe, who owns several area Foodland stores, says the stores are changing distributors from Super Valu to Merchants Distributors of North Carolina-the latter serves the Piggly Wiggly chain.
That means, starting March 18, Foodland stores will be changing their name to Piggly Wiggly.
Oppe says there will be no changes in ownership or employment at the stores, or the stores' involvement in the community.
What will change, he says, is a greater selection of produce and meat products, and lower prices on more than 3,000 items. There will be changes in some products being offered to customers.
He adds the new stores will continue Wednesday senior discounts and its rewards program.
This is part of a gradual process that's been going on for the past several years, involving Foodland stores throughout West Virginia.
Piggly Wiggly is a chain that's been in business more than 100 years, with independently-operated stores in the Midwest and South, and the nation's oldest self-service grocery store chain.
