A few locations around the Mid-Ohio Valley display Gold Star memorials as a reminder of the sacrifice made by those lost in service and their families.

The monuments are to honor the families of those who have lost a loved one who served.

Hershel “Woody” Williams began this initiative to honor gold star families and just last month, he was in Parkersburg for the groundbreaking of a new Gold Star memorial at City Park.

“It lets them know that their sacrifice that they made of a loved one is recognized and that their loved one then is never ever going to be forgotten because that memorial represents that loved one,” says the Medal of Honor recipient.

Currently, the Hershel "Woody" Williams Medal of Honor Foundation has nearly 50 dedicated memorials and over 60 additional monuments in progress.
