MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - An 18-year-old man has been charged with inducing panic after authorities said he made up a story about being stabbed on the Broughton Nature Trail in Washington County.
According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, Conner Krueger called 911 about 9:20 a.m. Tuesday claiming hysterically that he had been robbed, stabbed and assaulted by someone wearing a dark hoodie.
Deputies searched the trial for 20 minutes before they found Krueger on the trail screaming for help. He was not wearing a shirt and had a minor stab wound, which authorities later determined to be self-inflicted.
"After further investigation and discussion with him, he told us that he made the story up and no one actually confronted him or tried to rob him," Sheriff Larry Mincks said. "He was charged with inducing panic."
Mincks said five officers and a fire department helped respond to the call.
Authorities aren't sure why Krueger made the call, but Mincks said lying to officers is a very serious offense.
Krueger is being held in the Washington County Jail awaiting a court appearance in Marietta Municipal Court.
