Marietta Noon Rotary club raises money for disaster relief in light of Hurricane Dorian

MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - A local organization right here in the Mid-Ohio Valley is lending a helping hand to those affected by Hurricane Dorian.

The Noon Rotary Club of Marietta recently raised over $11,000 to purchase 11 shelter boxes.

Shelterbox is a Rotary partner that assists in disaster relief efforts around the world.

One shelterbox, which costs $1,000, contains a family tent, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, solar lamps, cooking supplies and more items necessary for living after a disaster.

"We were shooting for five thousand, which would purchase five boxes, five tents and we ended up blowing that out of the water," rotary member Danielle Bruni said. "We're really proud of community efforts and rotary efforts. We raised over $11,000, so eleven plus boxes we'll be able to purchase."

Bruni says fundraising dramatically increased when members found out if they raised over $500, certain club members would get a pie in the face at this weekend's Sternwheel festival. That will happen Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in front of the Lafayette Hotel.
