Marietta councilwoman Kathy Downer resigns
Marietta City Councilwoman Kathy Downer announced her resignation at a meeting Wednesday night.
Downer, an at-large council member and chair of the streets committee, ran as a Democrat and won office in 2014.
She says she's enjoyed her time helping make the city a better place since retiring as a nurse from Marietta Memorial Hospital. Her and her husband plan to retire and move to Washington to be closer to their children.
"I got impatient at the beginning because in nursing, things happen very quickly, in government things happen very slowly," Downer said. "So I have adjusted to that and I just enjoyed dealing with the citizens, I liked as difficult as it was doing door-to-door campaigning, that's when you get to talk the citizens."
Downer's resignation is effective June 1. She says the Democratic Central Committee will appoint someone to finish out her term until the next election.
