Marietta mayor says 2019 will see several key community projects

MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - A familiar face is in his 20th year as mayor of Marietta. Joe Matthews says his goal remains the same for 2019: continue to improve the Pioneer City.

Mayor Matthews says there's a lot of work to be done this year. The city was awarded several grants last year to help renovate projects like the Westward Monument and East Muskingum Park, along with continued upgrades to Gold Star Park, the city's wastewater treatment plant and other projects.

Matthews says his goal is to continue to improve the quality of life for residents.

"With some of the wastewater projects, water department projects and the street program which we're going to be using since we passed the levy," he said, "so we're going to be using money from that for the fire department, will be going toward purchasing fire equipment with it."

"Plus we'll be doing streets program more than we did last year so all in all I think it's going to be a great year for Marietta in 2019."

Matthews is the longest serving mayor of Marietta. He has not announced yet whether he will run for re-election this November. The filing date deadline is next month.
