Michaels reveals plans to close Pat Catan's stores

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - The Michaels Companies announced plans Wednesday to close all 36 of its Pat Catan's arts and crafts stores during the fourth quarter of the company's 2018 fiscal year..

However, the company, which currently has a store in the Park Shopping Center in Parkersburg, said it will rebrand as many as 12 stores and re-open them under the Michaels banner sometime in fiscal year 2019. The company did not disclose those locations.

Michaels said it will provide employment opportunities or transition support for affected workers.

In a news release, the company said "the Pat Catan's retail business has struggled in the face of industry headwinds."

The company also said it will continue to operate a support and distribution center in Strongsville, Ohio, that will support a growing wholesale business.

"We believe these changes will provide more value for customers and shareholders by enabling us to leverage a more consistent merchandise assortment and eliminate duplicative retail operating expenses," said Chuck Rubin, chairman and CEO of Michaels.

Michaels, which acquired Pat Catan's in 2016, also owns and operates more than 1,200 stores in 49 states and Canada under the Michaels and Aaron Brothers brands.
