MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - The Southeastern Ohio Food Bank and Regional Kitchen held a mobile food distribution event Wednesday at the Washington County fairgrounds.
Around a dozen volunteers braved the wet, rainy conditions to help give out food to food insecure families. 200 families preregistered for the event and received necessities like meat, fresh produce and milk.
The event was sponsored by Washington County Job and Family Services. It was organized last month when county officials worried SNAP recipient families might have trouble managing February benefits, which were loaded onto cards early because of the partial government shutdown.
"This one yes was sponsored in light of the government shutdown," SE Ohio food bank worker Kali Panza said, "and the need for people who may not have money to purchase food throughout February because of the early SNAP benefits loaded in January."
"They won't get their SNAP benefits next time until March, so we want to make sure, we're helping them out, giving them some food that way they can make it through the month."
Those that missed the event can look toward another event on February 27. For more information, call Job and Family Services (740-373-5513) or SE Ohio Food Bank (740-385-6813)
