CLAY COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - UPDATE 01/07/2019, 2:05 p.m.
A Kentucky woman appeared in court Monday to answer to a murder charge, after police say she gave birth, put her baby in a trash bag, then threw it over a banister at an apartment complex, where a neighbor found it two days later.
Amber Bowling, 21, of Manchester, Kentucky, is accused of killing her newborn shortly after giving birth to the boy.
An autopsy revealed the newborn suffered cranial bleeding and fractured ribs.
The court appointed Bowling a public defender who entered a not guilty plea on her behalf during the arraignment.
Bowling's uncle was in the courtroom for the arraignment. He says the entire family is shocked over the case, and Bowling's actions were out of character.
Bowling's next court appearance is Mar. 4 for a pre-trial hearing.
