New poll shows slight majority of West Virginians support Joe Manchin over Patrick Morrisey in U.S. Senate race

A new poll of 650 West Virginians shows a slight majority of likely voters in the state support U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D) over candidates Patrick Morrisey (R) and Rusty Hollen (Lib.).

The poll of 650 West Virginians was conducted between October 12-19, 2018, by a Texas-based research firm on on behalf of WTAP and Gray Television.

When each poll respondent was asked which candidate they would vote for if the election for West Virginia's U.S. Senator was held today, these were the results:

Joseph Manchin (Democrat) - 52%

Patrick Morrisey (Republican) - 36%

Rusty Hollen (Libertarian) - 4%

Don't Know or Refuse to Vote - 8%

When each poll respondent was then asked how they would describe their support for the candidate they chose, these were the results:

80% of poll respondents who chose Patrick Morrisey said their support for him was either "Strong," or "Very Strong - I've Decided."

78% of poll respondents who chose Joseph Manchin said their support for him was either "Strong," or "Very Strong - I've Decided."

54% of poll respondents who chose Rusty Hollen said their support for him was either "Strong," or "Very Strong - I've Decided."

When all poll respondents were asked whether they had a favorable, unfavorable, or neutral impression of each candidate, these were the results:

Joseph Manchin (Democrat):

49% "Favorable"

30% "Unfavorable"

21% "Neutral" or "Unfamiliar"

Patrick Morrisey (Republican):

33% "Favorable"

45% "Unfavorable"

22% "Neutral" or "Unfamiliar"

Rusty Hollen (Libertarian.)

3% "Favorable"

9% "Unfavorable"

88% "Neutral" or "Unfamiliar"
