UPDATE: Man charged in woman's overdose death

MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - UPDATE: 10/9/19 10:30 A.M.

Authorities have charged a 24-year-old Washington County man in the overdose death of a woman whose body was found behind a gas station in Marietta in September.

Darin M. Craig of Whipple is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Samantha Seevers, 24.

Marietta Police said Seevers was still holding a syringe later confirmed to contain fentanyl when her body was found behind the Speedway gas station at 100 N. 7th St. on Sept. 17.

Police originally said no foul play was suspected. However, while investigating an unrelated case, police said they found text messages between another person and Craig in which Craig acknowledged "playing a role in providing the drugs that killed Seevers."

Police said Craig later admitted that he had been a go-between for a dealer and Seevers. Investigators later determined that Seevers had arranged to meet with Craig to buy $40 worth of heroin while plotting with another person to steal the drugs from him instead.

Craig was arraigned Wednesday morning in Marietta Municipal Court. He remains in the Washington County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 3 p.m. Oct. 16 in municipal court.

No foul play is suspected after a woman's body was found early Tuesday morning next to the Speedway gas station and convenience store on 7th Street in Marietta, police said.

According to Marietta Police, a store employee found the body about 6 a.m.

Based on a preliminary investigation, police said the woman, whose identity has not been released, appears to have died from a drug overdose.

She had been dead for several hours when her body was found, police said.

Authorities are continuing to investigate her death.
