ODOT's "Put a Lid on It" campaign raises awareness for bicycle helmets

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ohio (WTAP) - Thousands of bicycle helmets are being distributed in Ohio this spring thanks to an ongoing partnership.

The Ohio Department of Transportation has joined forces again with the Ohio chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics for its "Put a Lid on It" campaign.

Hundreds of groups ranging from law enforcement and school to community and safety groups will receive helmets based on need.

Organizers say the goal is to ensure access to helmets and reduce biking injuries and fatalities among children in Ohio.

"We know from the American Academy of Pediatrics that about 75 percent of fatal injuries that happen on bicycles could be prevented with wearing a bicycle helmet," ODOT press secretary Matt Bruning said, "so it's a very simple thing that we definitely want to see everyone doing when they're out enjoying their bicycle."

ODOT contributed 6,500 helmets to this year's campaign and will provide the distribution network to get them to children in need.
