Local officials are urging area seniors to make some extra necessary preparations as Winter Storm Harper approaches Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Aging is urging senior citizens across the state to stock up on food, water, and other items in case of a power outage or emergency.

While storms affect the whole population, seniors can be more at-risk because of medical, transportation or other needs.

"You want to have an emergency kit, just basic first aid supplies, flashlight, extra batteries in case of a power outage," Buckeye Hill Regional Council's Mindy Cayton said. "You also want to check your medication. So if you have medications that need to be refilled. This would be the time to do i to make sure that you have that. Um if you're on oxygen, you want to make sure your oxygen tanks are filled."

Officials encourage everyone to check in on older loved ones and neighbors before, during and after the storm to ensure that they are safe.
