PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - Mental health awareness will be promoted in Parkersburg this weekend for the annual Out of the Darkness Walk of the Mid-Ohio Valley. There are 380 walks across the nation under the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Dr. Heather McCarter took over the Mid-Ohio Valley event in 2012. She said this year the walk will start in Parkersburg City Park, move to Parkersburg High School and then back to the park.

McCarter said this year is the first year they’ve met their fundraising goal before the event takes place. At the time of this article being written, they’ve raised over $45,000.

“Out of all the money raised 82% comes back to suicide prevention research and/or for the states to use for funding. Only 17% is used in operation,” said McCarter.

The event starts at 1 p.m. with registration beginning at noon on Saturday.
