Parkersburg City Council supports hiring incentive and potential raise for city police

PARKERSBURG W.Va, (WTAP)- City Council met Tuesday night and approved two key ordinances for the Parkersburg Police.

The first, on its final reading, is an ordinance that supports a $10,000 hiring incentive for applicants who successfully pass all requirements for hire.

The second ordinance passed on first reading to increase pay for the Parkersburg Law enforcement officers.

“What we’re trying to do now is revitalize incentives to retain and recruit good officers that can pass our background checks, pass our agility tests, our academy standards and so on, but keep those well trained officers here. So this is one piece of a larger puzzle that we’re trying to accommodate and accomplish,” says Joe Martin, Parkersburg Police Chief.

Both ordinances were passed unanimously by the council.
