PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - A sure sign of spring arrives on Saturday as hundreds of area youths are expected to turn out for the annual Parkersburg Fishing Derby.
Preparations continued Thursday afternoon as the ponds at City Park and Southwood Park were stocked with several hundred pounds of trout.
Children from 3 years old to 14 years old will be able to try their luck between 9 a.m. and Noon on Saturday.
The event is free, and organizers will award a grand prize for the largest trout caught. There will also be prizes awarded to participants in each of three age groups.
In addition, whoever catches a golden trout that was stocked into each pond will receive $100 that's being awarded in memory of former Parkersburg Mayor Al Smith, who founded the event.
No public fishing is currently allowed at either pond until after Saturday morning's event.
