Ritchie County delegate announces resignation

RITCHIE COUNTY, W.Va. (WDTV) - West Virginia House of Delegates member Jason Harshbarger announced his resignation Wednesday morning, according the House of Delegates Communications Director Jared Hunt.

Harshbarger, who is from from Ritchie County, was elected in 2016 to the 7th District House of Delgates seat representing portions of Ritchie and Pleasants counties.

He said in a letter that he has decided to pursue a private-sector jobthat will not allow him to continue his service in the house.

"It has been an absolute honor to represent the people of the 7th District these past three years," Harshbarger said. "I have thoroughly enjoyed serving with you and my fellow legislators, and wish you continued success in your efforts to make West Virginia the place to live, work, and raise a family."

The resignation is effective Aug. 30.

Hunt said the 7th District's Republican executive committee, will have 15 days starting Aug. 30 to submit the names of three applicants for the seat to Gov. Jim Justice. Justice will have five days from the receipt of the names to pick a replacement.

Officials said they hope to have a new delegate in place by the start of the next round of interim meetings on Sept. 23.
