Rotary Clubs push for Polio Eradication

MARIETTA, OH (WTAP)-- The Rotary Club of Marietta is celebrating its 100th anniversary next year.

Thursday evening, they were hosting the district governor and all area rotary clubs in an event to raise funds for the eradication of Polio.

"Polio-Plus" is a global health initiative to help immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries.

"Nigeria is within two or three months of being declared Polio-Free," declared District Governor Craig Maxey, "and then we have Afghanistan and Pakistan -- VERY challenging countries, as we're trying to vaccinate a very transient population. In addition too, we're trying to get to villages that are extremely remote."

For as little as 60 cents, a child can be protected against the crippling disease for life.

Only 31 new cases were found in the three remaining countries in 2018.
