MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - As school approaches, it’s time for drivers to start paying attention to school bus routes once again.
Between 2016 and 2018, over 3,000 traffic crashes involved school buses in Ohio. Fortunately, no children were killed in those crashes, but there were four fatalities and over 1,200 injuries.
Lieutenant Chris Chesar of the Ohio State Highway Patrol says that you must stop behind or in front of a school bus that has stopped to pick up children.
“For motorists, they need to be aware of the times. It’s going to be early in the morning, it’s going to be in the afternoon. Times are going to be the same. You know, there’s going to be a pattern there. So during those times, we hope to have a heightened alertness to the school buses in the area,” said Chesar.
Chesar also recommends that kids avoid being too close to the road as they wait to be picked up by the bus.
