COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTAP) - Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown introduced several bills this week to be added to the 2018 Farm Bill being considered in the U.S. Senate.
The 2018 Farm Bill is a bipartisan collection of laws and funding to help farmers and rural communities across the U.S.
Senator Brown's GROW Act would boost federal funding to improve water safety and soil quality, while his FARMS Act would help local farmers sell their products directly to consumers in their home states more easily.
Brown says his additions to the 2018 Farm Bill will help farmers survive difficult seasons to keep bringing food to our tables.
“We have a responsibility to help farmers in tough times, if prices are low, or there's a natural disaster, so they don't lose their farms. We have a responsibility to keep the Muskingum River clean and the Ohio River clean, by helping farmers adopt best practices."
Senator Brown also says he hopes the 2018 Farm Bill will not include any cuts to SNAP food stamp benefits for families.
