Belpre, Ohio (WTAP) - The city of Belpre is taking another step to reduce their carbon footprint.
City Council approved the addition of solar panels atop Fire Station One.
The city will enter into a contract with Pickering Associates for the design, installation and periodic maintenance for the array
Belpre Mayor Mike Lorentz said the projections are to offset the energy needs of the station and to return a bit more to the grid.
"It will be a savings to us by about 10 percent," Lorentz said. "And yes they will actually generate enough to have them sell some back to the grid, to AEP."
The installation is expected to pay for itself in energy savings.
Council sped up the process by holding both second and third readings Monday evening and passed the measure unanimously.
