PARKERSBURG W.Va. (WTAP) - The efforts of the West Virginia chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention were recognized Tuesday morning in a proclamation signed by Parkersburg Mayor Tom Joyce.

Joyce declared that the group's annual Out of the Darkness Walk is a recognized platform for promoting suicide awareness and prevention in West Virginia and the Mid-Ohio Valley.

Dr. Heather McCarter and Jason Ferrebee received the proclamation in a signing ceremony in Joyce's office.

"It gives us the platform to reach out to the community," McCarter said. "Not only to sponsors and people that are supporting us, but also for those that need to be aware that mental health is a priority."

The proclamation comes ahead of the annual walk in Parkersburg, which is scheduled Sept. 28 at City Park.
