PENNSBORO (WDTV) - A suspect in a Ritchie County shooting has died of an apparent suicide after a nine-hour standoff, authorities said.

According to the West Virginia State Police, officers were called to a home on Buck Run Road in Pennsboro on Wednesday after a report of shots being fired.

When they arrived, officers said they found that Stephen D. Wilson had allegedly assaulted two people, including shooting one person in the hand. The victims were able to escape, and Wilson barricaded himself inside the home.

Officials said negotiations eventually deteriorated, and a chemical agent was used to try to get Wilson to come out.

Then, about 4 a.m. on Thursday, authorities heard a single gunshot. When they entered the home, they found Wilson dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities from Ritchie, Doddridge, Pleasants, Wood and Wirt counties responded to the scene.
