VIENNA, W. Va. (WTAP) - A long-time Wood County delegate is honored with an award named for a long-time Parkersburg mayor and lawmaker.

Delegate Tom Azinger received the "William P.A. Nicely" award at the annual Wood County Republican Executive Committee dinner.

Azinger first served in the West Virginia Legislature from 1994-2012, and was appointed in 2018 to fill the remainder of the late Frank Deem's term.

He says Nicely is remembered for being more than a political figure.

"He helped found the South Side Lions Club, and also was active in the Shrine (Club), Azinger said. "Both those projects mostly dealt with kids, so that says a lot about him, too."

Nicely served three non-consecutive terms as Mayor of Parkersburg, and was a member of the legislature at different times between the 1950's-'80's. The award was established after he passed away in the early 1990's.
