Vienna makes record amount in building permits despite Five Guys departure

VIENNA, W.Va. (WTAP) - Despite the national chain being named America’s favorite burger joint by Business Insider last year, the Five Guys of Vienna is closing.

However, Vienna City Mayor, Randy Rapp, says Vienna had enough new development in the last year to make up for it. In fact, Rapp says the city had a record amount of building permits in 2018, totaling $13 million. That's double what the city made in building permits in 2017.

He credits the new Hobby Lobby, Big Lots, and a Sears building renovation, among many other new businesses that came to Vienna last year.

“We've got a very good solid economic base and you know, we work really hard to work with our businesses to make them want to be here, because that's what brings in people. So you always have to be on the lookout." Rapp explains.

Rapp says he is sad to see Five Guys go, and would have liked to see it be around for when the Hobby Lobby likely fills the parking lot in that complex. However, Rapp says the decision to close came from corporate.
