Vienna council rejects proposed urban deer hunt

There will be not be an urban deer hunt in the city of Vienna this year.
After several residents spoke out against the idea during Thursday's city council meeting, a resolution that would have authorized the city to apply for a permit from the state of West Virginia failed to get the support of council.
The council approval was needed to begin the process of investigating a controlled hunt.
Councilman Rogers demonstrated a compound bow and hunting arrows before the public in council chambers.
The permit deadline is Aug. 1.
In other action, council members discussed eliminating the position of economic development director, which is vacant following the recent retirement of Paul Thornton has retired.
There was discussion about the need for economic development and making position half-time, but no further action was taken following a 4-3 vote.
