UPDATE: Authorities: Coolville woman, Virginia police officer deaths believed to be murder-suicide

Authorities now believe the case where a Coolville woman and her cousin were found fatally shot in a traffic crash is a murder-suicide.

Virginia State Police have confirmed that the shootings occurred within the vehicle and are investigating it as a murder-suicide.

Emeri Connery, 26, of Coolville and Bailey Smith, 21, a police officer in Virginia, were found with gunshot wounds at the scene of a vehicle crash.

A firearm was recovered from inside the vehicle and there is no evidence to indicate another vehicle or individual was involved in the shootings.

At 4 a.m. Sunday, authorities responded to a call for a traffic crash on Route 23 in Lee County, Virginia. A 2015 GMC pickup truck had been traveling north when it ran off the left side of highway into the median.

Both of the vehicle's only two occupants were found deceased inside the vehicle. The bodies were transported to the medical examiner for autopsy and examination.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.

A Coolville woman and her cousin, a police officer in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, were found dead with gunshot wounds at the scene of a traffic crash early Sunday morning in Lee County, Virginia, authorities said.

Authorities identified the victims as Emeri Connery, 26, of Coolville, and Bailey Smith, 21, of Duffield, Va.

In a Facebook post, Stephen Lawson, the town manager in Big Stone Gap, said that Connery and Smith were cousins.

Lawson said Bailey had been with department since January 2018.

Connery and Bailey were found dead after Virginia State Police troopers responded to the crash about 4 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities said a 2015 GMC pickup truck had been traveling north on Route 23 when it reportedly ran off the left side of the highway into a median.

Troopers have not released any additional information.
