PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - Walkers and runners of all ages participated in the annual Jingle Bell 5K at Parkersburg City Park on Saturday.
Participants in the event sponsored by the River City Runners and Walkers Club covered 3.1 miles between City Park and Washington Avenue.
The event was the first of four in the club's winter series. It was designed to get people out and active even in the winter months.
"I don't have the final numbers, but it's probably 250 or so maybe even higher," said George Welch, the series' director. "That's a great turnout for a December race anywhere, but especially in a community as small as Parkersburg, Marietta, and Belpre."
All proceeds will be used for scholarships for seniors who run track or cross country at seven Mid-Ohio Valley high schools.
Upcoming events in the Winter Series 5K will be:
- Icicle 5K, 2:30 p.m., Jan. 12, Belpre Fire Department training building
- Valentine 5K, 2:30 p.m., Feb. 9, St. Michael Catholic Church, Vienna
- March Hare 5K, 2:30 p.m., March 8, Erickson All Sports Facility, Parkersburg
