MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - The Washington County Health Department is encouraging the public to help with its Tobacco 21 campaign with a video contest.
Any Washington County resident can create a video that supports raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21. The top two video winners will each receive a $500 scholarship. The deadline to submit a video is November 15.
Health officials say it's important to get the public involved, especially students and young adults.
"With the vapes coming up, and all the Juuls and the younger kids using them, I think it's just really important for everybody in the county to realize the addiction to nicotine is just as real as the opioid addiction or any other addiction," tobacco prevention coordinator Stephanie McPeek said, "and it's time that we take a little step forward and the best way to do that is by getting our community involved."
This is the first scholarship the department has ever offered and it was made possible through a grant from the Health Path Foundation.
To enter the contest, post your video to Youtube with the hashtag #Tobacco21. Next, fill out the entry and release forms which can be found on the Health Department's website (link is available under related links in the upper right corner of this page, bottom of page for mobile).
After the final round of judging, the top videos will be posted on the health department's Facebook page. The top two videos that receive the most likes will win.
