MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - Washington State Community College plans to start a food pantry on campus after receiving a $2,000 grant from the Marietta Welfare League.
A recent survey showed that 29 percent of students struggle significantly with food insecurity.
"We have about 44 percent of our students that apply for financial aid live in poverty, so we know that there are a lot of barriers that they are trying to overcome in order to be successful," said Dr. Vicky Wood, the college's president. "We have quality academic programs. We have exceptional faculty and staff, but the external barriers are a real challenge for our students."
At first the pantry will only include non-perishable items. The goal is to one day have all food items.
