CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Authorities have begun an investigation into two inmate-on-inmate assaults at a regional jail in West Virginia.

Lawrence Messina, a spokesman for the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, said one inmate was involved in both assaults at the South Central Regional Jail. The inmate's role in the incidents remains unclear.

Messina said one of the inmates received outside medical attention following the assault.

The investigation comes as multiple deaths have been recently reported at West Virginia jails.

Two weekends ago, there were three deaths at three separate regional jails in West Virginia, including one at the South Central Regional Jail.
No foul play was suspected in those deaths.
