Why is West Virginia So Poor: A presentation
An analyst with the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy answers the question why is West Virginia so poor?
During a presentation Tuesday night, he covered why West Virginia ranks poorly in so many categories, like health and finances.
One reason is that there are many low-income jobs available, but not high-end ones. Workforce participation is low, which causes the state to struggle. Even West Virginia's topography can be a disadvantage.
"We can't do anything about our geography. We can't do anything about our rural nature, but we can do something about our workers and we can enact policies that can improve them," said Sean O'Leary, West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy Senior Analyst.
The event was sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Wood County WV.
