WOOD COUNTY, W. Va. (WTAP) - UPDATE: 04/01/2020
Wednesday was the first day of the weekly distribution of food to Wood County students.
Students received a box that contained 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches.
A few new locations included the Rural King parking lot, and the old K-Mart parking lot in south Parkersburg.
Over 60,000 meals have been distributed, and while it was considered a successful first day, there is always room for improvement.
"In the end, I think we certainly had enough food," said superintendent William Hosaflook. "We just need to work on maybe a couple more locations more north, we are not for sure yet, we are still looking at the logistics at this point. But, thus far, it was much smoother, than it has been in the past."
With schools being closed until further notice, Wood County Schools has found a need to expand and feed more students.
Through a food vendor called, "Compass", Wood County Schools are going to supply 6,000 meals to students once a week on every Tuesday beginning next week.
They will also continue to hand out instructional packets for grades Kindergarten through 12, which will be left out in front of the schools without volunteers due to social distancing.
These measures are being taken in order to reach all the kids in the county and surrounding areas.
"We want to make sure that we reach the kids throughout the county," said William Hosaflook, superintendent of Wood County Schools. "We understand that some families lack transportation, we understand that some families lack internet, so we want to do everything in our power to reach all the kids. So, we're going to try this, hopefully it works, and I know that we have received some phone calls of thanks and praise."
Here is the list of locations where food will be supplied every Tuesday:
- Mineral Wells Elementary School
- Lubeck Elementary School
- Jefferson Elementary School
- Franklin Elementary School
- McKinley Elementary School
- Madison Elementary School
- Fair Plains Elementary School
- Large site at K-Mart Parking Lot, South Side Parkersburg
- Rural King Parking Lot
- Pond Creek Volunteer Fire Departments in Rockport, and Belleville
ORIGINAL STORY: 03/25/2020
Wood County Schools are in their second week of giving out meals to students because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The schools have changed the way they are distributing the meals as they are no longer handing them to the parents in their car. Instead, they must come to where they are and take the food.
They are expanding their availability of their meals for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
