Wood County defers action on opioid cases to attorneys

By  |

The Wood County Commission is giving its hired attorneys the ability to join a recent settlement of an opioid lawsuit.

The law firm it hired recently told commissioners counties should pursue their own legal cases against drug manufacturers.

There's concern about how much a settlement would benefit West Virginia counties.

"The compensation is such that it is based on population. The impact of this has been much greater in West Virginia and Appalachia than certain counties in Ohio."

Major drug manufacturers recently settled a lawsuit that was due to go to trial in Cleveland.

That settlement, however, does not resolve thousands of similar cases nationwide.
