MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - Work has begun on the new home of the Washington County public defender's office. However, current workers won't be moving very far. The new office is being built on the site of the former Chase bank drive thru and parking lot on Third Street.
The county purchased the property in March 2018.
Workers say this will improve access for clients and allow workers to be even closer to the courthouse.
"New is always good," Washington County public defender Ray Smith said. "We like new and living, being real close to the courthouse is going to be great. I think they're going to let us have access to the backdoor, so that will be kind of nice."
The public defender's office is currently located on the second floor of the dime bank building on Second Street. Smith added that the move will lead to less overall office space but it will not impact their work.
