Betty Jean Kirby Lanier, 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 5th in Marietta, Ohio, surrounded by her family.
Betty was born on June 9th, 1927 in Lynch, Kentucky to George Kirby and Kate Harbison.
She attended nursing school in Pensacola, Florida, and was a flight nurse for the US Navy from 1949 to 1951.
While stationed in Bethesda, Maryland she met her husband of 34 years, Glenn D. Lanier. They were married in September, 1951.
After retiring from a long and varied nursing career, Betty spent her time volunteering in senior citizen centers and hospitals and traveling the world.
She was a prolific reader, collector of teapots, and criticizer of the current occupant of the White House.
Though she spent her final years in Williamstown, West Virginia, Betty made a home in many places, among them Austin, Houston, TX, Titusville, FL, Pittsburgh, PA, and Seattle, WA.
Betty is survived by her children: David Lanier, Jan Pickering, Kathy Fontaine, and Mary Kay “Sam” Lanier, as well as by her ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn and son Bill.
A private family memorial will be held this summer.
