Robert McNeil "Rob" Connell, 63, died on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at his home in Largo, Fla., after an extended illness.
He was born on December 5, 1953, in Charleston, W.Va., the son of Patrick Mullen Connell and Lorraine Jean Montgomery Connell.
Rob was 2 years old in 1958 when his father died, and his mother moved the family first to Kingwood, her hometown, and then to Morgantown, where she bought a home in 1959. Rob grew up in the Sunnyside neighborhood, first attending Seneca Grade School and then, after its closing, moving to Central Elementary. He graduated from Morgantown High School in 1974 and then studied accounting at West Virginia University, where he received a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1978. Over the years, he continued his education by completing business and computer-related courses at Fairmont State College, Sante Fe Community College, and St. Petersburg College.
He worked as an accountant for Consolidation Coal Co. in Monongalia County, W.Va., for a decade before moving to Florida, where he worked in various corporate positions. In 2006, he took a job with Raymond James Financial Inc., where his duties at corporate headquarters included the investigation of suspected money-laundering activities.
Rob is survived by a sister, Patricia Jean Connell of Largo, Fla., two brothers, Michael (Carol) Connell of Grant Township, Mich., and Patrick "Rick" Connell of South Pasadena, Fla., and three nephews, Patrick Connell of Port Huron, Mich., Capt. Matthew Connell of Camp Zama, Japan, and Ian Caldwell of Grant Township.
The family plans a private memorial service this summer in Rob's beloved hills of West Virginia.
