Jo Ann Smith, 84, of Parkersburg, WV, passed away on August 6, 2019 at her residence surrounded by her family.
She was born January 7, 1935 in Gandeeville, WV, second daughter of the late Alfred Guy Gandee and Martha Evelyn Lowe Gandee.
Jo Ann was a graduate of Parkersburg High School with the class of 1952 and attended Marietta College for two years.
She was married to the late Alvin K. “Al” Smith, former Mayor of Parkersburg, for 40 years. This marriage produced three beautiful daughters, Valori Anne Smith Mace, Sheri Lee Smith Cox and Kathi Jo Smith Baker (deceased). Jo Ann was a stay-at-home mom and grandmother until the age of 60, when she joined the work force at King Brothers Fabricating Inc, Vienna, WV. She retired at age 70 in 2003.
Jo Ann was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Nu Master Chapter for almost 50 years. She was a charter member PEO Chapter Q and Chapter Z, a charter member of Friends of Blennerhassett Island, the Gihon CEO’s, The Rockin Gold Line Dancers (12 years) a volunteer at WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center since 2006 and the Parkersburg Fishing Derby since its inception.
She is survived by two daughters, Valori A. Mace and Sheri L. Cox of Parkersburg; two granddaughters, Shannon L. Cox (Matthew Johnson) of Charleston, WV and Samantha Jo Mace (Tyler VanMeter) of Parkersburg; one grandson, James P. Cox (Shay Beckett) of Huntington, WV; two great-grandsons, Ryan Wesley Hill of Charleston, WV and Cooper James Cox of Rockport, WV; two great-granddaughters, Averi Jo VanMeter of Parkersburg, WV and Charlotte Jae Cox of Huntington, WV; sister in-law, Glenna M. Gandee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, husband and daughter, Kathi Jo, Jo Ann was preceded in death by, brothers, Robert A. Gandee and Charles E. Gandee; sisters, Hazel M. Batton and Mary Alice Gandee.
Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike St, south Parkersburg with Reverend Richard McClure officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 11 am – 1 pm.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to charity of choice, Amedisys Hospice or Erickson Field.
