Irene J. Conaway, 93, of Harrisville, departed this life on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019, at her residence.
Irene was born Jan. 13, 1926 in Salem, W.Va., a daughter of the late Clare and Wilma (Corder) Swiger.
Irene attended Ohio Valley Nursing School at Wheeling General Hospital in Wheeling and earned her degree as a Registered Nurse. She served as a volunteer for Ritchie County EMS as an EMT and she also served as a volunteer nurse for Ritchie County Schools. Irene was a longtime member of St. Lukes United Methodist Church in Harrisville, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir and was a member of United Methodist Women. She also volunteered for the Red Cross and served as 4-H leader in the community. She was a member of Harris-Ritchie VFW #3554 Ladies Auxiliary and was a proud supporter of West Virginia University Law School, Parkersburg Area Community Foundation, WVUP Foundation and Wood County Christian School.
She is survived by her husband, A. Bertram Conaway; step children, Diane Conaway Braun (Mike) of St. Marys,and Michael B. Conaway (Beth) of Newport, OH; step grandchildren, Lynn Braun, David Braun, Joshua Conaway, John Mark Conaway; step great grandchildren, Mia, Lawson, Isaac, Titus, Silas, Genesis, Karson, Kaisyn, Keyera; her brother, Peyton Lake, Boynton Beach, Florida; sister in law Patty Jenney; nieces, Holly Jenney; Stephanie Gast and Hope Griggs; and a nephew Todd Jenney.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Moats and her brother Russell Jenney.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, at St. Lukes United Methodist Church in Harrisville, with Rev. Bill Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in the Harrisville IOOF Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2pm-4pm and from 5pm-8pm on Wednesday at the Raiguel Funeral Home in Harrisville, WV.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Irene’s name be made to St. Lukes United Methodist Church, 320 E. Main Street, Harrisville.
