John Edward “John Ed” James, 82, of Parkersburg, passed away October 6, 2019 at his residence following and extended illness.

He was born October 2, 1937 in Braxton County, a son of the late Howard and Ruth (Bail) James.

Surviving is his loving wife of 62 years, Marion Joan (Shawver) James, daughter Stefanie Ivany (Tom) of Canfield, OH, son Stephen James of Charlotte, NC, sister Rita Campbell of Marysville, PA, sisters-in-law: Enid James, Gloria James and Judy Shawver and brother-in-law Pete Spencer.

He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Kayla, Arica, Nicole, Cassidy and Emerson along with four great grandchildren: Lincoln, Amelia, Kallie and Kaia and several nieces and nephews.

John retired from Dupont as a Supervisor after 38 years of service. He and his wife Joan celebrated 62 years of marriage in June of this year. John always kept God and family in focus.

He was a member of Grace Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and on many other committees through the years. John had a passion for service and went on many disaster relief trips to help others in need.

He was a self-taught, School of Hard Knocks builder. He had many creative ambitions and the skills necessary to complete most of them. He never forgot his roots and love for Braxton County. He lived for the many four-wheeler trips he took back to his boyhood home.
Later in life he developed a love for classic and antique cars. He was a member of the Pioneer Antique Automobile Club. John served 6 years in the US Army Reserves. He was also a member of Vienna Lodge #172 AF & AM.

In the final season of his life, John lived at Elmcroft Assisted Living in Marietta for 7 and ½ years. The Staff and Residents there became his extended family and brought much joy to his final years. John and his wife remain truly grateful for each one.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: Vernon, Roy and Lee James, sister Blanche James, brother-in-law Jerry Shawver and sister-in-law Berna Spencer.

Funeral services will be Friday 11 a.m. at the Grace Baptist Church, 55 Rosemar Road, Parkersburg, with Dr. Todd Hill officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be Thursday 6-8 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg and one hour prior to services at the church.
