Dr. Sy Sarkarat, 66, of Parkersburg, passed away unexpectedly at his home March 15, 2020.

He was born March 22, 1953, a son of the late Mohammad Hossein Sarkarat and Fatemeh Sarkarati.

Sy was the Economics Professor at West Virginia University at Parkersburg. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and Milwaukee. He received his doctorate from West Virginia University.

Sy enjoyed spending time at his “hobby farm” in Ritchie County. He was an advocate for all animals, taking in stray cats and feeding his pet deer at the farm. He was an avid runner and a member of the River City Runners. He enjoyed cooking and canning and making good use of nature’s bounty that came from his farm.

Surviving are his daughter Nadia Sarkarat of Waukesha, WI, two brothers: Mohammad Ali and Javad Sarkarat, his fiancé Melanie Britton and her children Maci and Kaycee, his niece Laleh Sarkarat and her husband Amir Aref, along with their son Daniel Aref and cousins: Reza Sarkarati and Reza Sarkaratpour.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Farideh Sarkarat.

There will be no visitation or funeral due to recent mandates pertaining to community events. A memorial service will be planned at a later date to be held at the West Virginia University at Parkersburg campus.
